Dyslexia is diagnosed in children at very tender age. Various symptoms of learning disorder get manifested in the early stages of school goers though in some exceptional cases children exhibit learning deficiency even before getting admitted to school. There are several symptoms of dyslexia and they vary in accordance with severity of the disease and age of the affected.

The dyslexic children are diagnosed with the following major symptoms:

They are slow learners. They take prolonged time to learn new words.

They show difficulty in catching up with rhyming words.

They have great difficulty in distinguishing words with similar sounds.

They can hardly develop phonemic awareness implying that they often end up mixing sounds at the time of uttering words.

They suffer from the deficiency of associating sounds with the corresponding letters.

They are also slow in reading and unable to read anything accurately at times.

They often mess up while attaching proper meaning with corresponding words.

They are unable to recognize similar and dissimilar letters having problem in rightly pronouncing them.

They show inability in simple mathematical calculations like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

They find it problematic to follow rapid instructions or just make a mess by executing those instructions in disorder.

It is no surprise that children suffering from this type of disorder lack in organizational power. As many of us are quite unaware of such disorder, teachers don’t take any special care to help them to overcome their deficiency. Guardians along with teachers often fail to understand their problems and accuse them of negligence and naughtiness for not doing well in examinations.

The dyslexic children can surely be helped in their studies through special methods of teaching. It is often seen that such children are born genius and excel in any field in future. The famous physicist Albert Einstein, the noted painter Pablo Picasso, the brilliant scientist Edison, the renowned painter and philosopher Leonardo de Vinci, Tom Cruise—the heartthrob of Hollywood are a few to name among many successful personalities who suffered from dyslexia. But it was not a stumbling block on their way to be recognized as the greatest prodigies the world has ever produced.

Dyslexic children often face humiliation in the hands of classmates, teachers and even relatives due to their lack of coordination in works or speech problems in their childhood. Often being prey to scolding from peers and booing from friends, they live secluded lives. May be, this seclusion along with their dogged determination, take out the talent dormant in them. The mockery that pushed them aside to live a lonely life somehow stimulates them to transcend the barriers on the path to the peak of success.

Remember the boy Ishant in the much acclaimed film Tare Zamin Par? This picture released in India in 2008. The boy could not mix up with others in classes and almost lived a recluse life in hostel. He was also poor in studies and considered a disgrace to his family as compared to his elder brother. As the film drags on, we get to know that Ishant has a problem of learning disorder. In medical jargon, this disability is referred to as dyslexia.

So, if your children are showing any dyslexia syndrome, instead of throwing tantrums at them, try to encourage them to nurture their flair and instill confidence into them so that they can also do miracles like so many well known dyslexics with great perseverance and strong determination.
